Useful Ways to Use a Random Wheel in Class

Use it for content, not only names

The obvious use is choosing a student, but the wheel is often better when it chooses the task instead. Add revision topics, vocabulary groups, question types, writing prompts, historical periods, or activity stations.

That keeps the randomness focused on the activity and avoids making a student feel like the whole class is waiting for their name to appear.

If you use names, keep the situation comfortable

A random name can choose who starts, reads next, or answers a low-pressure question. It should not override an accommodation or force a student into a public situation that is not appropriate for them.

For repeated turns, remove selected names or use the history so the same few students do not keep appearing by chance.

Good classroom uses are usually simple

The wheel works best when the options are similar in effort and easy to understand. If one result means a two-minute activity and another means a twenty-minute task, the randomness is deciding more than it should.

If the device is shared, clear saved lists when the names should not remain available to the next person using the browser.
